Happy Halloween Week!

Hello PreKPals and Families-

WOW! That is about all I can say in regards to our very first fieldtrip to the Barnyard! Thank you so much to all of you who came with us! Miss Anna, our guide, had only positive things to say about how sweet and well behaved our class was! Everyone had so much fun and we were all so tired! The weather was perfect and I know we all made lots of memories together! Well done friends!

In Heggerty phonics this week we are learning Little Boy Blue. We will send a copy home for you to enjoy with your child. We will work on the letters Dd and Kk this week. In Math we will work on position and location. You can help with this at home. Have your PreKPal put their backpack NEXT to their shoes. Line up toys and ask them to put the bear BEHIND the truck or IN FRONT of the doll. This is a hard one for young learners and we have noticed that they don’t understand what we mean when we give oral directions related to position. We will be learning about Nocturnal Animals this week and trying to survive the week of Halloween! Ha!

Speaking of Halloween- we do NOT dress up or have Halloween parties at RQES. We are only allowed to have Holiday parties in December and Valentine’s parties in February. We will have a special snack on Tuesday and we will be doing a big science experiment with the rest of PreK with our pumpkins. It will be a fun day, even without costumes and parties at school.

PLEASE do NOT send ANY CANDY TO SCHOOL after Halloween. Candy is not allowed for snack time and only one tiny piece (i.e. one hershey’s kiss or mini candy bar) in lunchboxes please.

It’s the week of a full moon, Halloween, Winter Weather is finally arriving AND the time changes………just send us all of your prayers and good wishes! 😊 Speaking of the time change- Here is some great advice from a veteran teacher friend!

“My annual advice to parents of littles the week before we “Fall Back” and change the clocks.

Change them on Friday night. That way your bodies (and theirs) can have an edge on adjusting before Monday morning. I still do it, even though I don’t have littles.”

We are getting into the holiday season and we’d love to include your family traditions! We have many diverse cultures at RQES and if your family celebrates something other than Thanksgiving and Christmas, we’d love to hear from you so we can include your traditions in our learning! In the past, we have had Hanukkah, Ramadan, Diwali, Kwanzaa and several others. I know not all of these holidays are celebrated in the winter months, but we learn about Traditions around the World during December and we would love to make our learning inclusive of the celebrations you share with your families. Just send an email or a Dojo message so we can add your celebrations to our learning. We might even ask you to come share with the class!

This week the weather will be COLDER! We go outside first thing in the morning for PE and right after lunch for recess. Remember that your PreKPal will need a jacket that buttons or zips. We ask that you only send an over the head sweatshirt IF THEY CAN PUT IT ON AND TAKE IT OFF INDEPENDENTLY.

Happy Fall Y’all!

Hello PreKPals and Families-

We finished up our dino unit and are now moving on to Community Helpers! We have changed our dino dig in dramatic play into a vet’s office, complete with lots of pets, x-rays, dress up clothes and more! Our writing center has changed into the post office with costumes, a mail truck (grocery cart) to deliver the mail and a letter box. You will probably have lots of “mail” written by friends in your child’s binder this week! We love to share mail with our friends.

In Heggerty phonics this week our Nursery Rhyme is The Wise Old Owl. We are sending a copy home for you to enjoy with your child. This was a new Nursery Rhyme to me when I began teaching PreK. Did you say this Nursery Rhyme when you were young? It has quickly become one of my favorites. We will work on the letters Bb and Ee and we encourage you to begin working on letter recognition with these letters and practicing the sounds they make as well. In math, we are still working on recognizing patterns this week as well, and we will start looking at all the ways to make 4 using counters.

If you missed school picture day, or you want to redo their pictures, don’t worry! A make up day will happen soon! We will keep you posted.

Your October calendar is coming home on Monday! Can you believe we are in October? I can’t! We are going to begin our yearlong science experiment with Pumpkin Jack soon! We cannot wait to share it with you. If anyone would like to donate a pumpkin(s) to our class, we’d love to have one with a stem!

In anticipation of the weather getting cooler, we are asking that you send a lightweight jacket that ZIPS or BUTTONS (No over the head sweatshirts please!) to leave in your child’s cubby. We will play outdoors in all temps and sometimes in the rush to get to school, jackets are left at home. Please put your child’s name in their jacket and make sure they can recognize their jacket. If they have a jacket at school then we don’t have to worry if we have an unexpectedly cool morning. I am going to include the link for the PreK jacket flip. Practice this at home! This is how we teach our PreKPals to put their jackets on by themselves.
