READ READ READ with Book Orders!

Oh. My. The magic is about to happen in your house. Remember, parents, when we were little and the Sears Christmas Catalog came in the mailbox?  Well, get ready for it, cause tomorrow, your munchkin is bringing home the first BOOK ORDER PACKET! The joy and anticipation will be all that you remembered from that catalog full of toys…..  🙂 I am 15 different kinds of excited about it, too. Ummmm, cause in case you can’t tell….this teacher LOVES LOVES LOVES good books!

When you order, we get bonus points to spend on BOOKS! When you order online, we get bonus points to spend on BOOKS, plus, we get a free certificate for a free book (of our choice) for every online order. Good.Deal.

I tried to copy and paste  the letter from the Scholastic website below. But it did not work correctly and made my blood pressure go up a bazillion degrees. Never fear…..You are getting it tomorrow with a copy of the order forms.

Get ready. It’s gonna look like Christmas around your house…..and I have it on good authority that Tory is already making his Christmas list….he has 4 things on there already…..and he’s polling your munchkins to compare notes…..just so you know….

If anyone needs to do a secret book order for any reason, go ahead. Just let me know that it is secret and I’ll keep it hidden, otherwise, books are handed out in student backpacks as they come in from the company.

See you tonight at PTA….don’t forget it’s McDonald’s Spirit Night! Tell them you are with RQES and we get part of the proceeds from all sales tonight (5-8ish? pm). So come to PTA and don’t cook. I mean, everybody loves a cheeseburger, right?

Happy Ordering….of all the books and burgers and nuggets and such…. Alicia

Happy Monday

Happy Monday Bear Class Folks!

We have a lot to do this week…and I cannot believe that on Wednesday it will be September already! WOW! Thanks to all of you who have turned in your BAMA caravan money ($5) and for those who have already prepaid for the CHOM trip in September. It really helps to get those funds in quickly. If you have not paid yet, there is still time, and if it will help, since both of these events are “field trips” (even though for BAMA caravan we stay at school) you could write one check to cover both amounts. We can’t always combine things since the money goes to different places, but in this situation, it will be fine.

Spelling test papers came home on Friday! Kiss Your Brains! We had a great bunch of grades on those. You may have noticed that we had 12 words but only 10 are on the list. The other 2 words will come from high frequency words used in our reading series. Reading test papers are coming home in Monday’s Bear. To clarify, for this test, I read each question and all of the choices to each group. In the next few weeks, that support will be given only to struggling readers. Your child will get the story of the week in his Bear each Monday. Just look in the first tabbed section in the back. This week, we are reading Pig in a Wig. This is the story that the whole class reads several times in class (and we give it to you for reading at home). The decodable readers that come home throughout the week (the ones with the colored card attached) are leveled to your child’s specific reading level. All decodables contain the high frequency words and some of the amazing words from our reading series.

This week’s Family Fun Times packet is also coming home. I only have one copy per student, so please have your child take care of it. Take it out of the yellow pocket and only place it back in when you are ready for me to take it out to check it. It is due on friday of each week, but you can turn it in whenever it is complete.

OPEN HOUSE! This Tuesday is our first PTA meeting and open house. We have already had First Grade Firsts, so we will NOT be meeting in room #221 on Tuesday, however, I will be at PTA in my official “Grayson’s mommy” capacity. I will be attending open house in his 4th grade room. I am encouraging you to come to the PTA meeting to learn about all of the wonderful things we have going on at Rock Quarry. Come by the classroom to see some of our work outside the room. And most importantly, come to VOTE on the uniform situation. I believe you only get a vote if you attend PTA, so come on out and let your voice be heard. (I am not a fan of the uniform proposal…but each family gets to vote for themselves.)

DIBELS information….all students benchmarked! Hooray! This first test was an easy one, and “benchmark” is only the minimum standard, so we are hitting the ground running. It will be time for conferences in about a month and progress reports will come out soon. Look for your child’s STAR or STAR EL test scores coming home soon!

Happy Monday Everyone! I’ll see you at PTA on Tuesday night! Alicia

Wordless Wednesday

Important Stuff & Things….

Hello Bear People!

I am sorry I could not update the blog yesterday. We had no access to the outside world due to some TDOT issue with the cable lines or some-such nonsense. But we are back in business now! Not a minute too soon either cause I have a ton of stuff to tell you! HANG ON! Here we go!

Math- We finally got our math workbooks. We have been working in our math journals and doing lessons on the Promethean Board (henceforth called the Board….Promethean Board is just too long to type) until now. We will continue with the Board but we are excited to add our workbooks to the mix. Today your Bear brought home the Student Resources booklet. Just put this to the side and use it as a resource. There’s a great glossary inside, as well as the exact same workmats we will use in class. You do not need to return it to class. It is yours to keep.

Reading- We have met in reading groups each day this week. We are still working out our placements, so bear with us on what is coming home. Some of it is too easy and some of it is too hard. In a day or so your Bear will have stuff that is “just right”. You are doing a fantabulous job of returning all reading materials, the colored/numbered cards and the black clips each day! Thank you! We share the materials and it really helps when you return everything each day. Continue with the reading logs. Volume of reading is a HUGE factor in reading success. The weekly story will come home every Monday on a sheet of paper. We do not have enough Big Blue Readers to send home for every child, plus they are HEAVY. So we’ve done the stories for you. The first story is “Sam Come Back!”. These weekly selections can be found in the first tabbed section in the back of the Bear Binder. We will have our first reading test on Friday…..so practice reading and remembering what the test is all about!

Spelling- first practice test is Friday. We will practice test for 3 weeks and then begin recording grades. The spelling words for the year (and test dates) are now in each Bear Binder in the last tabbed section.

Science-Oh.My.Word….did you hear the excitement in your child’s voice when he/she told you that we are “going to science”? After a yucky year last year with scheduling, Ms. Nevin and I worked hard to get all of our special classes arranged so that we can meet in the afternoons in the lab to “do science”. We are working on mixing colors right now and we have already completed two experiments. Ask your Bear about them. We have science journals, too. We are big time. This is not your Granny’s first grade, people!  This week we are also using the Board in center time to do color mixing. You can do it at home, too. Just log into

www.peepinthebigwideworld.com   and click on games. Your Bear will know what to do. Have fun!

We are also playing Twister to learn colors and left and right and I can tell you that Ms. Hand and I have grabbed our cameras more than once to capture the hilarity of that little exercise. Fun Times in #221! Fun Times!

We are still learning to do new centers and turn in papers in the correct place and all that jazz. Remember that all graded papers do not always end up in the grade book. Don’t panic over “grades” but do use them as a guide for what needs to be reviewed at home.

And just to show that little people everywhere are learning……my baby girl, Annelise, who turned 7 months old on Monday, crawled for the first time today! I am a little bit sad and a little bit happy about that.

Wordless Wednesday is tomorrow! Check back in! Alicia

Wordless Wednesday

Day 6

Wow! We have been learning some stuff in first grade! We have already learned how to go to 8 different centers and do our work there….and we have 5 new centers to learn about tomorrow….

We have a new friend in our room, Calicia (Ca-lisha) Smith and that brings our total up to 18….with 9 boys and 9 girls. That has only happened one other time in all of my 17 years of teaching little people.

We went to the computer lab today (we will go every other week, alternating with Guidance) and we did our math lesson on the Promethean Board in class. It’s only Tuesday afternoon. Are you tired yet? Whew!

We are learning how to do our morning chores like Weather Watchers, Time and Money Helpers, Math Pocket Chart and Problem of the Day. We are all already answering the Graphing Question before we even come into the room, then putting our names in the boy/girl chart and then answering the Question of the Day.  All of that happens by 8:15.  🙂

Ms. Hand and I have been doing individual assessments and we will continue that through the end of the week. We will begin our Reading Street series and leveled reading groups on Monday of next week. Our reading groups are fluid, so your child might be a green star one week, a yellow or red star the next and a blue star the next week. (You do not need to worry about what color group they are in…..you just need to read read read read read at home).

Tomorrow is learning about the library with Mrs. Pilsch and Mrs. Hickman, and it’s also DIBELS day. You will not hear from me about DIBELS unless there is a problem….so, no news is good news!

I have some more stuff to tell you but I am afraid that your brains are going to explode……so, I’ll wait…..

I hope to see you on Thursday night at First Grade Firsts. Leave the little people at home. (That way there will be more time for you to play with the Promethean Board!)

See you soon! Alicia

What a great day!

We had a wonderful day in First Grade!  Each little bear has lots of homework for the PARENTS to do!  Some of it is fun stuff, like the red plate, the puppet and the puzzle….and some of it is paperwork that is very important.

Please sign and return page 39 of the student code of conduct, and any other papers that need your signature.

It’s not too late to turn in your donation money. I’ll send a receipt as soon as I can. Donations of any amount are always appreciated. The suggested amount is $35.

Cute Cute Cute new Rock Quarry T-shirts are available for $12. Look for PTA friends selling these near the car pool line.

Our air is working very well, and since it is sooooo hot outside, we don’t want to complain. Please let your child bring a sweater or lightweight jacket to keep in the cubby for when it  is a bit chilly.

You do not have to send snacks to school. The snack list comes home tomorrow. Jack’s family has provided yummy snacks for this week. Thanks French family! Everyone will have a turn once this semester and once next semester. Check snacks off your list! 🙂 You are welcome!

We worked hard and the day went by very fast! Can’t wait to see everyone back again tomorrow with their papers and their Bear Binders!

Happy Red Plate Day! Alicia

You are subscribed! ;-)

back to school 052Hello from Mrs. Jenne’! I used the emails you provided and subscribed you to the blog. You are welcome to change or edit your own email, or add other email addresses as needed. Many parents subscribe the grandparents or other family members so they can see what’s going on in The Bear Class. You may also unsubscribe if you’d like…..however, I do not do a printed  newsletter, so if you want to know what’s going on….you should keep your subscription. To add or change email addresses, just go to our class on the Rock Quarry Elementary website and click on the subscribe box on the lower right hand side. If for any reason you do need to unsubscribe, please let me know and I will try to print a paper copy to send home with your child. I hope you stay on though, cause the blog is a lot of fun (and it makes more work for me if I have to print stuff) and we may or may not talk about you if you leave…..(just kidding…..)  🙂 Seriously though, I hope you enjoy the blog!

Now for some parent homework: Each child will need a set of Crayola Skinny markers for journal writing and a Playtex COOLSTER TUMBLER for the copious amounts of water your child will learn to drink everyday. I am including a picture for your shopping pleasure. You are welcome. It is very important that you purchase the Playtex COOLSTER TUMBLER and no other brand. Each Bear may choose his own color cup (they do not have to be green). These water cups are found in the baby aisle of Target and WalMart, Publix and most major stores. It is not a sippy cup. Make sure your Bear knows this. They would not want to be offended by a teacher who makes them get a sippy cup. Heavens no! It is a water cup. See, it does not have a spout. It is very similar to your Starbucks mug…..be sure to point this out to those who are in doubt. ha!

This brand/style cup is very important because it does not leak. Believe me. I have tried them all. We have tables. Leaking cups RUIN books and papers. Teachers with ruined books and papers tend to get grumpy. It is 95 million degrees outside. We need to drink a lot of water. We have a water fountain near the classwith really cold water (and also one in the room, but it makes the pipes squeak in Mrs. Prowell’s class when we over use it) . Your Bear can bring his cup to and from home each day filled with ice water if he wishes. ONLY WATER……no milk, no soda, no juice…..And he will bring it home every Friday for a run through the dishwasher (or everyday if Mom perfers).

2 tasks parents. 2 tasks! Crayola skinny markers and a Playtex COOLSTER TUMBLER. Just what you wanted to do on the last day of summer……shop some more…..

Just send them in by the end of the week…..don’t panic…….

See? I told you I’d make this first grade thing easy for you, didn’t I?  Happy Last day of your summer! I’m at school today! Alicia

A New Friend!

We are thrilled to welcome Kierstyn Toxey (G) to our class! That brings our total to 17 friends!

We will also welcome Ms. Laura Hand to our class as a MAP student intern. She will be with us all day, every day until October 29th.

Can’t wait to see you Tuesday! Alicia
