Seuss on Sunday

I will post all about our Seuss activites later on but wanted to get this out to you asap.

All Target stores are having Seuss stuff on Sunday! (You know I see about half the class there after Church on Sunday….. so have some Seuss while you’re shopping!) I may or may not see you there. I am supposed to be in Memphis right now but am stuck in Tuscaloosa due to the weather.

Here’s the link!

Happy Weekend! Alicia

Mem Fox!

Man! I forgot the most important reason I was posting today. The minute I hit send I knew I had goofed and that Joe would be all on me again about rampant posting. 🙂 I’ll take the ribbing! Because I just have to tell you about Mem Fox!  This week our big book is one of my absolute favorites! Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge written by Mem Fox. I promised the children that they could hear Mem reading stories in her lovely accent….. and they would never forgive me if I let it slip by….. so, here you go

http://www.memfox.com/welcome.html

If you go down the left hand side you will see a link to hear Mem read. It is wonderful! Mikki Powell and I are sort-of Mem groupies. We tend to stalk her at teacher conferences just to hear her read. It’s that lovely. However, if you ever find yourself at a Mem Fox reading, and she tells you to turn off your MO-bile phone before she begins reading…..she’s not just kidding. Do it. Or she will come down off the stage and confiscate your Mo-bile phone and embarrass the snot out of you. I’m just sayin’……

The above mentioned scenario did not happen to me, or to Mikki Powell, because we are rule followers. However, we did witness it first hand. We both double checked and triple checked our phones again at this point and almost vomited from embarrassment for the poor teacher this happened to……apparently writers do not like to be inturrupted while reading……wonder how she’d do in the Bear Class….cause let me tell you……those little munchkins have a lot to say right in the middle of my stories…….at least they are not packin’ cell phones yet….

So, go……listen….oh and just in case you don’t know….you’d better get a few tissues before reading Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge….don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Happy Surfing! Alicia (who promises not to post for at least 12 more hours……)

Hop on over to IHOP and help cure cancer!

Former Bear Class Parent, Sarah French, IHOP owner, sends this message for helping kids with cancer. Don’t pancakes sound yummy?

Hello Friends!

Tuesday February 24th is National Pancake Day and the Tuscaloosa IHOP is giving away a free plate of pancakes to all customers.  The hook here is an effort to collect donations, equivalent to what might be spent on a plate of pancakes for our favorite charity, Camp Smile-A-Mile.  The offer will be all day, but since we are a 24-hour operation, the free pancakes will only be offered from 6am until 10pm.

Below is a link to Camp Smile-A-Mile’s website.  It is a camp for children with all types of cancer.  This camp is free to its campers, and every dollar donated will go toward helping these children to enjoy a fun-filled summer and a vacation from being sick.

You found it where???…..

You’ll never guess where I found the flash drive keychain containing all 3 of my flash drives……. in my purse! ha!  Those of you who know all 5×5 of my little purse will be surprised that I could not find it for a whole week. Those of you who know just exactly how much stuff I can keep in that little purse will not be surprised that I could not find it for a whole week in the first place…..

We have been having a blast this week with our story Dinosaur Bones. Since it was a short week with Monday off and then we had our fieldtrip to CHOM, there will not be a test on this week’s story. Also, there are no challenge words this week in Spelling. And, I added 5 points to everyone’s spelling test (unit 4 week 1) due to my own silliness…..the word was “may”, not the name of the month “May”. Thanks Larmore family for kindly letting me know. (Our old spelling list did have months of the year sprinkled in throughout……)

Sloane and her family found this link for Sue, the T-Rex. Enjoy!

The Bears are having a great time with AR tests. They are reading up a storm! Today, I actually had to say, “NO reading til we get so and so done!”  Gasp! I never thought I’d say that!  It did not last though. They quickly did the so and so and got right back to their books……  🙂 Makes me happy that they LOVE it so much.

The book orders will be here soon. I will send them asap. Shipping has been a bit delayed due to weather at the book warehouses.

Seuss Day is coming on Feb. 27th! More information came home today. Each child will need to bring a bed pillow. We are making autographed pillowcases (remember those pillowcases you bought in August?)

We are doing a First Grade play in May!  I cannot wait to tell you all about it!

We will have Ms. Stamps with us beginning next Tuesday and continuing each week thereafter. She is an intern from The UofA in Special Education. She will be helping us with Math. Ms. Gilham will continue to be with us Wednesday-Friday, and then 2 full weeks in April.

We are really struggling with math right now. We are working on “one more” and “one less” and “ten more” and “ten less”….some of us still have the deer in the headlights look…. please practice at home. You can do this in the car while you are running errands…. Say, “We are going to count up by 10’s and we will start with 4 (or some other number).”  Then help them say, “4, 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, 74, 84, 94, 104”. Do the same thing backwards. This is harder though. Say, “We are going to do 10 less. Here’s your number…… 57. What is 10 less than 57?” We are using number lines (hand held and those you can jump on) and 100’s charts to help visualize. Just keep practicing. They will get it!

Have a happy weekend! All of our adoption paperwork is complete (as of today) so now we are waiting for our last agency meeting and then our book will be shown! Hooray! I am hoping for an early summer baby!

I am not a nurse…

Dear Parents:

My flash drive is AWOL so I cannot do the Weekly Report as you know it…..until I find said flash drive….(a smart teacher would have saved it on her desktop…..but I digress….)

Here’s the scoop!

We now have a cutie-patootie little tote stocked full of napkins, forks and spoons for lunch!  Thanks Donovan family! Now, we will not be charged for those who forget their stuff or for those who need another napkin for spills, etc….

Tomorrow we will leave RQ at 8:30 to go to CHOM. Meet us there if you’d like. (There may be a charge for parents….bring some moolah.) We will return at 10:30ish and go straight to lunch. We will eat speedie-quick and then go straight to PE.

We need to work on handwriting. Work on putting capitals where they should go and neatness overall. Many of you are doing a spectacular job on this!  Thank you!  If you got a note on graded papers today, please practice.

Thanks to all who helped with the Valentine Party!  I saw pictures (thanks Waldrop family) and Mrs. Plott told me what a wonderful time you had!

Mr. Brad’s surgery went well and he is walking (sort-of) in a big-old boot with crutches. I am glad to be back at school. I am not a great nurse. I am a much better teacher and you all are much better students than Mr. Brad is a patient! Hahaha! (Shhhhh don’t tell him I said so!)

This week’s specials are: Library (Tuesday 12:15-12:45) Computer (Thursday 10:05-10:40) and Music (Friday 10:05-10:40)

Have a J Week! Alicia

Brother, can you spare a dime?

There are tough times all over….and apparently that includes the cafeteria at The Rock and throughout all of the Tuscaloosa City Schools. Last week, I was outraged when a student was charged 5 cents for a napkin…..(don’t get me started…..) So I complained to the powers that be and they investigated this nonsense…..and well, I am sad to say that this travesty is true. I am copying and pasting the letter from the people at the board of education at the end of this post….so you’ll know exactly what was said.

My advice to you….If your child brings his lunch (about 90% of the Bear Class do so) please pack napkins, forks, spoons, etc…..whatever your child will need to consume the lunch. This will eliminate silly (though apparently necessary charges for non-food items). Since the board who makes this policy also pays my salary and hosts this blog, I am finished with this conversation…..

Just pack napkins, forks and spoons, people. We will pick our battles and believe me, we’ll probably need to save our energy for something really important…..

The Child Nutrition Programs funds have been reduced at each school site, because of this we will charge for any extra items taken other than the meal.( tray, napkin, fork or spoon, condiments, and milk is included in the meal) Below is a list of extra items and the cost, CNP Managers will charge for any extra items received at the point of sale. Yes, Joe, It’s another post! 2 in one day! :-)

A new book order packet came home earlier in the week. It is also online for secure ordering with your credit card, if you wish. http://pcool.scholastic.com/parentordering/login.jsp

User name: bearclass   password: room221      The deadline for ordering is February 18. Happy Shopping!

(Above-listed title is harassment-in-fun to Bear Class Parent Joe, who ribbed me about the plethora of posts in one day last week!)

The yucks….

I hope that everyone is well and back again on Monday!  Grayson came down with the yucks in the middle of the night on Thursday. Needless to say, I was not at school on Friday. Poor Ms. Gilham and some “unknown” sub (you know how I HATE that, but when you call it in in the middle of the night, you get who you get………)I know of at least 2 Bear Class friends who have had the yucks also. We have cloroxed the room, door handles, tables and restroom. Actually, since I have done this at home and at school, my hands are peeling from the scrubbing! Take your vitamins people! Wash your hands!  Get well and come back to school on Monday! I miss you too much when you (or I) are gone.

On another note, our friend Shamir McKinney moved to Pennsylvania last Friday. We will miss him even though he only spent a small amount of time with us. He was a sweet boy and a nice friend. We wish him and his family well as they move to their next home.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend……and if your child says, “My tummy feels funny….or….”I don’t feel so well…..” BELIEVE THEM…..and get the clorox wipes quickly!

Happy disinfecting….Alicia

AR Home Connect

I know…I know….You are tired of the blog already. Sorry. I have a lot to tell you! Below you will find a sample of the AR Home Connect letter that your child is bringing home today. If your child is one who takes AR tests, this will be a great tool for you to use from home or anywhere you have computer access. You will be able to view all tests taken this school year. You can see how many points the child has, you can also see the scores for each test.

If your child is not yet taking AR tests…….we need to get on it!  Send a note and I will show your child how to take an AR test. He/she will need to read chapter books very carefully. Picture books need to be read at least 2 times before a test is attempted. Happy Surfing!
