Real School

Welcome to Real School! Last week we really had a hard time “doing real school”. Overall, most friends did fairly well, but we had many friends who were disappointed when they did not get to have Friday recess and/or some who had to “move their name” to yellow for not listening and following directions. I know that now that they are BELIEVERS in real school….they will get with the program. This is not your granny’s first grade…..or even “your” first grade for that matter. We work HARD all week and we have lots of things to learn and do each week. I try to present the material in a fun, child centered way…but the reality is that there is a ton to do and achieve before second grade. I know we have only been in school 19 days (2o tomorrow!) but second grade is coming at us quickly. As a former first grade parent if you do not believe me! 🙂 Just hold on…..it will get better and it will get easier, I promise. And I always tell the children our first grade motto: “Everything is easy if you LISTEN….but everything is difficult if you do NOT.”  Encourage your munchkin to listen and do!

The first “Family Fun Times” packet will be coming home on Tuesday. This packet is due on Friday for a grade. Please leave all pages stapled together and make sure your name is on the front of the packet. This packet will help your child with many of the language and literacy skills we will test on each week. We will have a new Family Fun Times packet each week on Monday, due Friday of the same week. Happy reading and practicing.

Don’t forget the “Be a Champion and Read” contest! Winner will get tickets to the Iron Bowl and a visit to the field during the pre-game activities. All students will get a bookmark for entering. If you need another form, just let me know.

Many graded papers came home last week. You will usually get papers each week (not on a set day, just sometime during the week) but we have had many problems with the NEW statewide grading system, iNow. I hope the kinks are worked out and the grades that I have entered into the program will stay there….and not disappear! Look for more graded papers this week and weeks in the future (on a more regular basis from now on). You do not have to sign the papers unless I stamp them with “sign and return”. Please help us by keeping the yellow folder pocket it the Bear Binder cleaned out each day.

Zero the Hero is coming on Tuesday! I wonder what he will bring?! Ask your munchkin to tell you what he brought!

We have many exciting activities coming up in the next month or so! Johnny Appleseed parade, our All Things Fall unit, picture day, Ms. Belew’s unit on Maps and Globes, I ordered our owl pellets for dissection in science, our new math books will be arriving….so many more wonderful things! Changes in our blog soming soon (this is not a happy for me…just more work). It is great to be in first grade! If you are here……………you are AWESOME!

Have a great week! Alicia
