Almost May!

Hello PreKPals Families!

Each Monday (and only being served on Monday), you can get 5 days of breakfast and lunches for your children (18 and younger) for free! No sign up is needed. No forms to fill out. Nothing to but drive up and get a grocery bag full of meals. Both city or county schools will have meals but not all schools are a pick up location. Here’s the TCS information. PLEASE take advantage of this opportunity. Annelise loves this as an outing and she loves all of the fresh fruit!

**For the summer months, I believe that food cards will be issued for those who qualify. I think the amount per cards is $300 per month. If you have never applied for free/reduced lunch and you would like to do so now (we know that circumstances may have changed during this time) please go to this link:  https://www.tuscaloosacityschools.com/Page/124 and fill out the application on the right hand side of the page. Go ahead and do it now so that you can receive the food card once they are distributed. I believe they will be mailed to your home.

I just want all of you to remember that our online activities are optional. We hope you take a look and enjoy doing some or all of them, but we know this is a stressful/changing day by day time for all of us. If it is too much- pick and choose. That’s what we do at our house. If your child is at their grandparents and online learning is out of the realm of possibility- don’t stress. They will learn far more important skills and make precious memories with their grands. Someone posted this the other day and it really resonated with me: “ We are not homeschooling – we are crisis schooling.’ Our country is in crisis- but we do NOT want any activity we post to add to your plate. Just know we love you and we miss you!! Please let us know if you need help with ANYTHING.

First Class PreK sends out the Strengthening Families Newsletter. I am copying and pasting it here for your benefit.

Family Strong in Alabama (Strengthening Families Implementation Program)

Our Monthly Focus is Social and Emotional Competence of Children Definition: This factor looks at how well your child interacts with you and with their friends. It also looks at how well your child handles their emotions and can tell you about their feelings. Why It is Important: The ability to build strong relationships and express emotions effectively leads to a healthy family. Strong relationships build a strong family. Remember, we teach children to be calm by being calm. What It Looks Like: Children can have “huge” emotions and we need to support them when they are dealing with anger or sadness by giving them words to use. Helping them name their emotions and then teaching them how to express these emotions will be a skill they will use the rest of their life. Look around the world right now, wouldn’t it be great if we all handled our emotions better!

Activities to Do at Home:

  • Talk with your child about red and green choices. Red choices we stop like hitting when angry and green we keep doing like asking for a turn.
  • Talk about your child’s feelings and your feelings- label emotions with your child
  • Give your child time to play with friends
  • Give your child alternate ways to express negative emotions
  • Let your child problem solve their own problems and support them as they try new solutions
  • Try to look at situations through your child’s eyes. Why are they so frustrated? What help do they need to understand a situation? For example, why are they crying at WalMart? Have you been there too long? Did you remind them before you went in that you would not buy anything extra like candy or toys? Look at it through their eyes. They have only been in this world for 4 years, forgive them while they are learning to handle hard emotions or big days.

Links for fun!

Hello PreKPals and Families!

Our RQES staff made a video for you! Here’s the link if you haven’t seen it. We all miss you so much!

https://youtu.be/pst9YthoQ8I

We found out that this Friday, April 17 is not a “school day”! Do something fun! Sleep late! Don’t worry about any online learning. There won’t be any activities posted to SeeSaw that day.

Ms. Hoffman and I are loving seeing your activities on SeeSaw! We hope you are having fun with them. We try not to post too many, usually only 3-4 per day because they are short. In a week or so we will “archive” the ones we have posted so far. It will make it easier for you to get to the current activities.

Parents- Did you watch Reading Rainbow when you were younger? Starting next week, LeVar Burton will be reading again! You can find it at www.twitter.com/levarburton There is a time for children, young adults and adults! Enjoy!

If you are looking for a fun new app for your PreKPal? We found a free virtual slime app! It’s fun for writing, drawing and playing! (and it won’t require you to actually MAKE the slime!)

This is the company I order the caterpillars from. They are super easy to raise and they are amazing to watch. (bonus tip! Once the caterpillars make their chrysalis, they shake if it’s too noisy or if they are moved too much, so it’s a good incentive for the PreKPals to whisper. The Week We Learn to do SeeSaw

Hello PreKPals Families!

The Office of School Readiness (OSR) is the governing body of our PreK program. They have sent us some guidelines for things PreKPals need to do during the school closure.  I have sent every parent a private message on class dojo with your child’s individual code for online learning through the SeeSaw platform. Each week, Ms. Hoffman and I will upload activities for your PreKPal to do. These activities just for fun! PreKPals learn best through PLAY! The activities on SeeSaw will be quick (remember we have a 10 minute screen limit) but many of the activities will be a set of directions for you to follow to build or create something that might be done with toys or outside! Not all of our learning will be done in front of a screen. Check your mailbox for this week’s science activity!

This brings me to the other point I wanted to be sure to make. I know many of you are sharing devices with older siblings. I know from personal experience, just how much work there is with older grades…..I’m looking at you 4th grade!! Please let your older children complete their online activities first. While they are working online, give your PreKPal a challenge. I promise it will work on needed skills and it will keep them occupied so that the big kiddos can work. Some challenges you might consider:

  • Build a tower, building, structure that can hold a small stuffed animal on the inside.
  • Build a tower, building, structure, bridge that can hold a small stuffed animal on top.
  • Draw a picture of the inside of your bedroom
  • Draw a picture of the outside of your house
  • Write all of your ABCs with sidewalk chalk
  • Write your name in rainbow colors.
  • Give them 5 post it notes and ask them to bookmark 5 pictures in some books. The pictures should be something they want a grownup to tell them more about.
  • Make a collage with magazine photos.
  • Write all of the letters and numbers you see in your house.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE RECOMMENDATION FOR LEARNING AT HOME IS 20 MINUTES DAILY, NOT TO EXCEED 60 MINUTES DAILY OF “SCHOOLWORK”

Most of you are worried about skills needed to transition to kindergarten. Here’s a list of the things PreKPals will be assessed on at the beginning of Kindergarten. Can you-

  • Name uppercase letters in random order
  • Name lowercase letters in random order
  • Know numbers 0-10 in random order
  • Count out items to match a number
  • Identify basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle)
  • Write name (uppercase letters ONLY where needed)

Here’s a link to our TCS librarians reading stories. Mrs. Pilsch is reading Smelly Socks. Can you find it? https://tuscaloosareads.org/category/tcs-reviews/read-aloud/

Since we are learning about spring, I thought you might want to make a bird nest. We have a bird nest in our garage! I’m afraid to disturb it- because there may be babies in there! You can make a bird nest out of a lunch bag! Check out this link! http://drjeanandfriends.blogspot.com/2020/03/sack-it-to-me.html

You can find some rocks on your nature walk to use as eggs or you can use some plastic spring eggs! You can also make eggs with playdoh or by balling up paper and covering it with masking tape. How will you make eggs for your nest?

Here’s a great link to show you how to direct draw a bird. (Parents- directed drawing is when you show the PreKPals a step and they copy it, then you do the next step. We did this when we drew our Cat in the Hat drawings for Seuss week.) https://paintingvalley.com/guided-drawing#guided-drawing-8.jpg
