Apple Week

Hello PreKPals and Families-

TOMORROW is School Picture Day!!

Our weather unit was short and sweet last week. We had fun with our walking rainbow science experiment and reading books about different types of weather. We turned the dramatic play area into a weather station and had fun with our dress up clothes and weather puppets. Did you know that we graph the weather as we sing the weather song each day, and we spell the weather words in sign language? Ask your PreKPal to show you how!

This week, we are kicking off our farm study with a unit on apples! This is also our fieldtrip week! Everyone will have a Tshirt to wear to the Barnyard. We will put the Tshirts on at school the morning of the fieldtrip.  A detailed set of parent instructions will come home on Tuesday or Wednesday.

This week in Heggerty phonics we will learn The Wise Old Owl. We are sending a copy home for you to enjoy with your child. This was a new nursery rhyme for me a few years ago but it has become one of my favorites. Was this a nursery rhyme that you learned as a child?

Last week we learned the letters M and O and the sounds they make. This week we will work on the letters and sounds for B and E. We have a cool new High 5 routine that we do with our letters and sounds as part of our arrival activities. We have a cool orange button that we can press to hear the sounds. It’s so fun! I’ll try to record it this week so you can see it on dojo. In math we will be learning to make groups of 4 and all of the different parts that can make up 4.

Please remember to make sure anyone who is dropping off or picking up your PreKPal knows that they MUST park in the front lot and walk across the crosswalk. We have a lot of foot traffic coming across the hill by the flag pole, and walking/parking in the bus lane. The safety patrol officer will start issuing tickets and we want to make sure everyone is doing the right thing for the safety of our PreKPals.

Please remember that we are asking the PreKPals to NOT play superheroes at recess or PE.

Weekly Reminders:

  • A water cup with a valve, already filled with water (flavored water must be clear!), labeled with your child’s name. Make sure your child can drink from it at home before coming to school. NO OPEN POUR CUPS. NO JUICE!!!
  • Your child’s backpack and lunch box (if they will not eat from the cafeteria). We are not allowed to heat lunches for children so send their things ready to eat, please!
  • PreK Binder (please clean out daily)
  • Wear tennis shoes and socks!
  • Please send a bag with 5 snacks (that do not need to be refrigerated!) labeled with your child’s name, if you did not send them last week. Please do not pack snacks in the lunchboxes.
  • Your child’s nap mat

All Kinds of Weather

Hello PreKPals and Families-

We had so much fun with our Dinosaur study! Everyone had a great time hunting “dino” fossils last week and playing with all of the cool dinosaur toys! This week we will be learning about weather! We have some fun rainbow activities in the sensory tub and lots of cool rainbow blocks for the light table. We will make tornado art with our salad spinner. We will have cloud paint. We have turned our dramatic play into a weather station and we have lots of weather related activities and puzzles on the shelves. We can’t wait to get started!

Every Friday, in addition to Trike Day, we pick new jobs for the upcoming week. Ask your child to tell you his/her job. Don’t worry if they have forgotten! We will remind them!

We did not send home little books on Friday. We typically won’t send them over the weekend. This week we are adding a reading log sheet to the binder for you to record the book they have shared at home. This will hopefully keep us from sending home the same book more than once. The librarian gave us some different books and we have some on order, so we now have a bigger variety to send. We hope you are enjoying reading with your PreKPal. Please remember to send the books back in the BINDER. We check binders daily but we don’t check backpacks.

If your child has to change clothes at school, please be sure to send a new change of clothes the following day, and remind them to take it out and put it in the black tub at the bottom of their cubby. We will also help remind them. Thanks!

This week in Heggerty phonics we will learn Humpty Dumpty. We are sending a copy home for you to enjoy with your child.

Our barnyard fieldtrip is coming up! Have you made plans to go with us? We can’t wait to enjoy this time with you and your child! More information is coming soon! Our Barnyard shirts are red (I think)! I’ll send a picture so you can coordinate the rest of your PreKPals outfit if you’d like.

Please make sure anyone who is dropping off or picking up your PreKPal knows that they MUST park in the front lot and walk across the crosswalk. We have a lot of foot traffic coming across the hill by the flag pole, and walking/parking in the bus lane. The safety patrol officer will start issuing tickets and we want to make sure everyone is doing the right thing for the safety of our PreKPals.

Dino Week #2!

Hello PreKPals and Families-

Dino week number two is here and we are so excited to continue learning about them. Last week we learned about the word extinct. We learned about meat eaters (carnivores), plant eaters (herbivores), and omnivores and what kids of teeth they have. We also discovered that we are omnivores!! We had a LOT of fun with volcano science, we had music class and library last week, too! This week, we will make salt dough fossils. Go on a dino dig outside and have some great small group lessons!

This week in Heggerty phonics we will learn Three Little Kittens. We are sending a copy home for you to enjoy with your child. Everyone did a great job last week with the review week. We are learning to focus on rhyming words and word beginnings that sound the same.

We will begin Number Blocks for some quick whole group math soon. There are some great Number Blocks videos that you may be interested in looking up on YouTube to follow along at home.

Please make sure anyone who is dropping off or picking up your PreKPal knows that they MUST park in the front lot and walk across the crosswalk. Dinosaur Week!

Hello PreKPals and Families-

For the next two weeks we will be doing one of our favorite units in PreK! It’s Dino Time!! We will be learning about all things dinosaurs! We have dinosaurs at the light table, in the sensory bin, in the block center and in our thematic tubs on the shelves. We will have some great science experiments, we will learn to do directed drawings and our dramatic play area will change from the home living area to a dinosaur dig!

We will have library class AND music class this week! So much fun and learning going on in PreK!

This week in Heggerty phonics we will review the nursery rhymes from the past 4 weeks. We will have a new nursery rhyme next week. If you have signed and returned the red form for books to come home, those will start coming home this week for “reading” practice. If you haven’t signed the red form, it is in your child’s PreK binder.
